|If you were to believe all the marketing hype from Bushnell about the Bushnell 2.5×42 Nightvisions Binoculars with Built in IR then these night vision binoculars would wow you by truely “…turning night into day…”. Now if you know anything about night vision devices you will know that is a massive claim and especially for a simple Gen 1 set of NV binoculars like these. What they do offer is good solid night vision technology and good performance at a good competitive price. So lets be realistic and start at the begining and see what these Bushnell NV binoculars are really like shall we?
First Look & Feel
At first look this seems to be a rugged pair of NV bins. They feel solid in the hands and you can get a good grip on them. I always like that as I am not the most coordinated of fellas being so big. They weigh less than two pounds have attachments for hand strap and can be tripod mounted. This will give you a lot of flexibility as to how you want to use them.
The look is a pretty standard grey and black, although I would say that the black for me is a little glossy. You would be surprised how much light can get reflected from these sort of surfaces even just in mooonlight. Thats a little picky as the amount of shiny surfaces is minimal.
The controls for the IR illuminators are well placed and won’t get in the way or be switched on accidently in use. That’s a winner as the illuminators are the things that will run the batteries down fastest. That goes for any IR bins not just the Bushnell 2.5×42 Nightvisions Binoculars.

How The Bushnel 2.5×42 Nightvisions Binoculars Shapes Up
General Night Vision
The Bushnell 2.5×42 Nightvisions has good 42mm objective lenses. this is a fair size in this class and affects how much light these NV binos can gather in to achieve good quality night vision. Along with the 2.5x magnification it means these binoculars stand up well in the Gen 1 class being more than capable with these specifications
Where you do get a good performance is with the vision range of a 4ft close up to 600ft long range and a good 94ft field of view at that distance
Using The Infra Red Illuminator
Obviously these binoculars are a pretty standard low end Gen 1 device. This is the lower end of the technology in the market. So in moonlight and in area of low or dispersed light they do pretty well thank you very much. But once you start to take light sources out of the environment they will struggle the same as any other Gen 1 night vision binoculars
But using the illuminator paints the subject or area and allows the Bushnell Nightvisions to pick it up and produce a picture for you. It is not visible to the naked eye so is secure for surveillance ops.
